I know people have a very secretive approach to their fishing but I thought I'd share my thoughts on bait choices to try and get a conversation going...

As most of you know I mainly use meat all through the year and occaisonaly a pellet for a bit of static fishing or when I fish into the evening...

99% of my last 2 years fish have come on meat and I like it as theres no specific size or shape, as I tear it off and not cut it, but it has the downside of being quite costly (250 tins this year) and the grease mealts your waders !!!

This year I'll stick with it and have decided to stick to no pellet fishing and move onto paste and matching boilie. Both the paste and boilies are new.

A lot of guys I know carry either one bait or about 6 !!

So...

You dont need to name anything but just as a bit of a survey how many different baits do you think you'd use in a season??

Me, 2 this year and I'm sticking to it...

I decided two years ago to confine my barbel fishing to two main baits, and stick at it for the whole season, which has become 2 seasons now. 2 pellets or 2 boilies, each of which are one type/flavour only. I don't feed and when I change bait the ones I remove from the hair get put in my bucket. I don't throw them in. One pretty decent day fishing somewhere new I had 3 doubles, a fourth fish of 9-15 and three other fish. Total bait used, 2 boilies, removed and fed to vole and 6 pellets - NO feed. Sometimes when blanking it's hard to stick to this, but decided there's no point in chopping and changing, I planned it and stuck to it. Overall it was worth it - I think. Suited me, wouldn't suit others.

I see some with 6-10 baits and they change so often I reckon the fish get confused.

When fishing the Trent I do use lobs sometimes, but don't bother elsewhere. I do get tempted to use meat once in a while but don't feel so confident.

I have used several different baits during the season and am still looking for the one that will
give me the edge.

I like using frozen boilies in preference to shelf life as I only take what I need for a session.
( mainline various flavours are my favorite make).I normally buy the matching paste wrap
although it works out more expensive.

I bought a job lot of "Bacon Grill" from Lidl's ( it is much more rubbery than Spam and stays on
the hook a lot better in the warmer water months) and use it for trundling.

When feeder fishing I tend to use 3 or 4 mm pellets and rarely hand feed a swim.

I tend to use P.V.A. bags if I want to have free offerings when using boilies.

I also use pellets but have not done well on the really big ones , two elips on a hair
rig being my favourite.

Try Barbel Fishing with PRAWN next season you will be very surprised, you will also catch the big perch, and carp love them too. Regards Ray

I've used them for Salmon fishing Ray and have often thought about using them for Barbel.

One big problem,! Stopping myself eating all my hook baits.-----John.

hi,same as you micky with the ellips,but the flat ones,and i only use 1on the hair.as for other baits i still use particles,and half a boilie in the colder months.derek.

I like to use the Barons meat as well but during the warmer months it gets a little sweaty

Not sure how much Barbel fishing i'll be doing this season but hope to try and catch on the float. As for baits......would like to try something different too Halibuts...i'm sick of em! Ellips i've used a few times so may give them a bash again. Also might try the maggot feeder with rubbers as hook bait.

Anyone gonna try on the fly

Not sure about rubbers on the hook old son, what brand are you going to use, you could try fruit flavour or even ribbed...

Or

You could wear one first and it'll smell like cheese paste...
