Great fish Pete.... Well done mate.
Just a cautionary note: ...The barbel is pretty well 'blind' (internal cataract/worms) in the eye you can see and nobody seems to have noticed or mentioned it! This can be caused by a parasite (Diplostomum), certain chemical discharges, fungus etc, so it is wise to check others, as it can be a sign of low water quality and indicate a progressing problem at times....cheers..Ray |

Well spotted Ray and I must confess and ashamed to say, I did not notice it.
I don't normally look for these things in Barbel but, I will in future. Can be common on the the river Test with some of the 'stocked brown trout'. Quite often they will get it in one eye only and one side of the fish will go completely black . We always put it down to 'eye fluke' but there are many other causes, as you well know. It would have been interesting to see both sides of the fish but, with the head on view, it does look as if both eyes are affected. An interesting point on this is do Barbel feed by sight alone, or do they feed by scent and feel.?? Pete, this does not detract from your catch, it is a Barbel in superb condition and fairly caught. It does , however, open up many questions about how Barbel feed.---Thanks for the post Ray,---Best wishes,---John.

Thanks for the comments Gents, Its good to hear all the comments especially if it makes us more aware of our fishes health. Shame there is no remedial action
apart from monitoring water quality and keep an eye out for it in future.
