Well done Pete, that is a superb chub.
It also beats my PB chub by 5 ounces, We've got a long way to go to beat Mickys' , but who knows. Best wishes,---John. |

Thanks for the photo Micky.
Cheers John, we will have to try to meet on the bank some time soon with Micky and give him a run for his money . We need to keep him on his toes as he is getting too laid back with his
fishing. He had to use a different chair this week as he has been using the old one too much and it cant take the strain .

Hi all
Can only echo Jez's sentiment. What a chub, Pete - and how big will that go in the Winter? If Mickeys' not quaking in his boots, then I bet KJ is planning his January plunder from across the pond! Congratulations Kev |

Great fish! Mr Parr - spot on...I will be back in Jan and March this year so I will be expecting some hints and tips in return for cheap gear! How about 300
yards of power pro for $10 ;-) Nice to see some big chub coming out on my favorite river again...however, are the small ones still around? Kev

Slow going last night. Tried to get my mate a first barbel (he has never fished before). He did hook one briefly and lose it. Other than that very quiet across
the whole stretch.

Just back from a family break close to the middle Wye. Decided to pack the rods. Had 2 hours in the morning and 2 hours 5pmish. Wanted my son and daughter to catch.Due to the colour in the river I fished 3 swims blind in rotation. We were very lucky an managed 10 between us,best a scrapper double, but the main point was these fish were mint hard fighting and looked like they hadn't been caught for a time. Believe me the 7lbers really scrap,my son's face was a picture,Andy. |

A string of blanks - trying some other sections....
Found some boris last night though - 5 including a 9lb 8oz, and 10lb 12oz, .in a mad spell from 8pm onwards...packed up when I couldn't keep my eyes open. Baptised my new camera, here's the 10-12:

Thanks Micky,
Hmm, that bridge looks awfully familiar .
Can I ask, what make is your chair? - I used to have one like that - and may consider replacing my (heavy) cocoon for something lighter... |

Well done Simon ,sounds a great session and a good photo.
That looks bigger than 4lb Micky, it's that camera of yours again. I was out today, very quiet most of the day, (I spent a long time trying to photograph a little mouse that kept darting out to nick some bait). Had a strong run about 4pm which resulted in my second double of the season at 11-8, (photo to follow after I've had a go at doctoring the background). Lost another double at 6pm when halfway through the struggle a large raft of dislodged weed floated down, caught my line. Barbel charging upstream, line being dragged downstream and me hanging on in the middle. The hook hold gave in. Oh bother!!, or many words stronger in meaning where shouted out loud. .
All in all another enjoyable day,---Best wishes,----John.

Another few to add to this years tally.
I found boris again: 3 to 9lb 1oz.... The first came within minutes of casting out, it never ceases to amaze me how powerful a 4lb barbel is, this one nearly took my rod in. I had fish feeding (for once), throughout the session, and could have picked up a few more. |

John lovely fish well done!
Joy O Joy! I rolled meat for 3 hrs without a bite then settled in to a banker swim to try out my new GPE Barbus Special Edition 12' 1.75lb Harrison 'Torrix' rod I took delivery of this morning. I only used it for the last hour and a half but it performed beautifully casting a 3oz loaded feeder with ease and the sensitivity showed every indication and registered the bites I had very well. I had a 5lb Chub first cast and the power of the rod was such that it was in the net in seconds.
The next fish a 7lb Barbel did put a bend in the rod but the power was noticeable although not detracting from the responsiveness and enjoyment of catching what is my average stamp of fish this season. The true capability of the rod became evident when I hooked what may have been my 1st double of the season after a minute or two of surging runs the sheer power in the rod (still no where near maximum) brought the fish under control and I thought she was mine as it hugged bottom just under the rod tip. I reached for the net and the fish made a final pull upstream which I thought was not a problem, how wrong was I!
The fish went into a snag which I was unaware of and locked up although I could still feel the fish on the end of the line I tried all the usual tricks to free it to no avail then I tested the rod against the snag unbelievably it began to move slightly with the flow of the river I managed to manouver it downstream towards the bank. Not wanting to damage the rod I placed it well behind me off the path and used my piece of broom handle reserved for such occasions to pull the snag (a 6ft tree branch 3" thick at one end) to the bank the rod was laid well back out of harms way (so I thought!) the fish was still attached as I lifted part of the branch with several other lines attached out of the water the fish was now a foot or two under the surface struggling for freedom holding the branch I could not reach the landing net and the fish straitened the hook and swam away.
I was relieved the fish was unharmed and lifted the rest of the branch from the water along with lots of smaller branches which I threw down away from the river after removing the lines lifting the large branch out of the water I walked upstream a few yards and as I threw the branch into the undergrowth something cracked and snapped under my size 11's. Looking down in the beam of the head torch was the outline of my new Barbus Special Edition among the vegetation and now broken branches sheer panic and dread set in as I thought my new rod was now a three piece!
I lifted the rod from under the branches and examined it carefully in the beam of my head torch running my fingers along the sections to feel for damage much to my relief there was none joy o joy!
No more fishing I was happy to let the river and Barbel win the night I would take my new prized possession home in two pieces
to fight another day looking at my watch it was 11 o'clock no way was I going to be home for 11:15 and as my wife Gail did not know about the new rod I
could not tell her the story in full!
