Must learn to smile!!
A few others were catching as well. Has the Kennet switched on now?

Fished yesterday 5:30pm - 9:45pm. I caught a lovely 11-01 and more importantly my mate Dave on only his second trip managed a pristine 4lb'er which nearly
pulled him in. Another one hooked for life.

John,
Thanks for for your good wishes well done on the catches. The times are interesting as I have read somewhere about Barbel feeding every 6 or so hours does anyone else subscribe to this theory? Alan |

Well done on the catches all. I struggled on the kennet to day with one fish of 8lb 9 about midday.
Water down a inch and clearer than Monday. First time for weeks I fished without having any rain. Tight lines all. Pete W |

Out again today and Alan my experience today was totally against the 6 hourly feeding cycle.
Started fishing at 9am., (same swim as yesterday) and hooked in to a 5lb'er at 9-20 am. Changed my end rig as I realized that I had caught 4 barbel on it and I normally change the hook length after 2. At 10-30am hooked into a bigger fish and after a lengthy fight the hook pulled. Gave the swim a rest for half an hour then had another take at 11-30am. This fish I also lost to a hook pull. What's going on!!!? After putting my reading specs. on, (which the silly old fool should have done earlier,) I could see that the hair was much to long,-----IDIOT!!!. Shortened the hair and at 1-30pm hooked and landed a good fish of 8-8. Gave the swim a good rest by going off roving, to no avail. Came back and the time I would normally expect to catch at 4pm through to 7pm I never had a twitch. Same sort of day to yesterday but the feeding times were so different. This is what makes Barbel fishing fascinating.---Best wishes,----John. |

John,
Totally agree its the joy of fishing! Regarding the hooks, hair etc. I think the rule is leave nothing to chance check everything on each cast as the next bite could be the fish of a lifetime! I lost a big fish last year due to a hook straightening I never got over it for months found later the hook was not fully tempered and was weak I now test every hook before tying them and every hook length when tied. Length of hair is something I do not have the expertise to advise on though personally I have the bait almost touching the bend of the hook in most cases when using elips pellets which is my main tactic other than rolling meat and I catch both Chub and Barbel with this set up. Good luck next time.........Alan |

Out today on the Kennet.
Thought I'd be in for a good day, what with overnight rain and rain in the morning, How wrong can you be. Nothing from 8am till late afternoon. Many thanks Roy for waking me from my deep sleep and good to see you again. If I had not been woken I would have missed the hard fighting 8" brown trout that came through the air to hand.
Did manage a long and lean 4lb barbel before I packed up,saved the day.---Best wishes,----John |

My first trip of the season to the Thames and it proved desperately hard I found the river low and crystal clear with an armada of boats of all sizes marauding
all over the river and through my swim till after dark!
I waited 3 hours for my one and only bite a Chub around 3 pounds at 10 pm then the river went quiet and flat calm and by midnight I had had enough.
The Kennet may not be fishing very well but its quiet with no boats that's where I'll be tomorrow!

In contrast to Alan the stretch I fished last night was packed with everyone catching except me. Fished 7 swims 4 of which have produced for me in the past and
never had a twitch.

I too was out yesterday and found the river clear, (by Kennet standards).
Struggled all day but managed a very strong Barbel of 9-4 late afternoon. Best wishes,---John. |

Out tonight after only one trip down the river in these last three weeks. Decided to fish one of the Wasing stretches and was rewarded with my second double
of the season...................just!
Beautiful hard fighting fish that tipped the scales at 10-01. Roy |

Well done Roy,great photo mate.
Knowning the Kennet has been hard lately I decided to go back to the "old days" maggots in a feeder and number 16 hook. No Barbel but plenty of silver fish. They also proved hard to catch often just sucking the end of the maggots. Went back to proper Barbel fishing as the light faded but was pestered with crayfish bites. I met an interesting lady ( batwoman the Upper Benyons. She told me the highest consentration of Bats was found under Padworth Bridge. She counted 234 passes ( on a sonar machine) in just 4 minutes. http://www.bats.org.uk/ne..._bat_weekend_30_31_august A Barbel blank but still an enjoyable day. We need plenty of rain as the Kennet is cystal clear. Micky

Hi all
Back down to the Wye - river at normal summer levels and looking amazing - loads of Kayaks though... Managed another good bag of barbel to an ounce under 9lb, top sport - and just look at the scenery... Also saw 3 new things today - a guy landing a 10lb+ salmon / a bull 'servicing' at least 12 sexy big uddered babes and 20 + dogs on a mink hunt, great stuff...
Cheers all Jez |
