Posts: 27 04/11/2009 08:32:22 bob hornegold	Tags : None The Barbel in my Avitar was found dead the other week, eaten by an Otter In the last few years I have seen my two favorite rivers- The Lea - Polluted and The Ivel- Ottered, badly effect in terms of Barbel population. Could it be the end of Small River Barbel Fishing as we know it ? And will we all end up fishing Closed Still waters which can be fenced off against Otters and Mink ? Bob

I dread the call, commiserations Bait Boat... Andy ...now if a fisherman speaks out on the riverbank, and there are no women there to hear him... is he still wrong...

Posts: 28 04/11/2009 11:34:05 bob hornegold	The Otters are doing untold damage to the Ivel and the Ouse, the Barbel on the Blunham stretch of the Ivel have been completely decimated and now they have moved to the most productive stretch of the Ivel. It will not be long before a Barbel is a very rare site on the Ivel. The Lea has Otters as well as polution issues to contend with, which is one of the reasons I hardly fish for the species now, I still have a good section of the Upper Lea with a reasonable stock of Barbel, but Otters have been seen on the higher sections as well. Knowone seems to want to state the obvious, these creatures need controlling or there will not be enought food for them. No small fish = No Herons and No Kingfishers, I wonder how the Bird lobby would cope with that !! Bob

Posts: 32 04/11/2009 16:21:13 mark anderson	Hi men , Bob , I am with you on the problem facing rivers , especially the smaller type of water , but I fed up with sticking my head above the wall to shot at . There is a tread running now on BFW , with people stating facts that I know are completly wrong , but I cant be asked to do any more . Experts have been saying there is an underlying problem , and the otter is highlighting it . This may be true , but I still wish the bloody things did not have a chance to do so !. One person intermating that the otters are not eating many fish , no carcases . Me and Sue personally found many carp to big twentys , and at least 4 barbel in an area ( wont name it out of respect to the club / anglers ) , all otter damaged . A serious lack of barbel , compared to what was there , in only a season . The landowner ( cant name him ) knows there was a problem , and fishing no longer takes place on his stretch . Yes this was a while ago , and things have moved on , but they were golden days , and we miss them . Upper Lea , perfect hunting grounds , same with the Ivel , lets hope all is well . Posts: 8 04/11/2009 18:29:35 adam howe	Thats really bad news :( Im as sure as I can be we have otters on the Thames in one area I fish, close to where the Loddon joins :( Its nothing but bad news with otters imo, not the fault of the otter of course but very misguided to reintroduce them with out taking into account the impact

Posts: 29 05/11/2009 06:37:48 bob hornegold	We have a huge problem with Otters, I was speaking to a bloke at a meeting ( can't name him, it was a private conversation) the other night who knows a lot about what is really going on. He told me that 176 Otters were offically released by the Otter Trust, but hundreds were released illagally by the well meaning fools who saw it as a mission to retroduce the Otter to Gt Britain? What happens to the Otters when they run out of food ? Its a crazy situation and as far as I can see, there are No solutions for Rivers. Adams Mill highlighted the beginning of the end and its only a matter of time before all rivers will be facing Otter destruction. Bob

Posts: 31 08/11/2009 08:21:25 bob hornegold	gonfishing, We have indeed had discussion on Zander and Crayfish, they have proved a problem on many waters, but they have not been responcible for the destruction of complete fisheries. I have seen complete section of the Ivels Barbel population wiped out by Otters and nearby Carp fisheries have had the Carp stocks decimated by these creatures. At least on Big rivers there is a chance of escape from these animals, whereas on small rivers there is not. And I don't blame the Otters one iota, its the misguided fools who took it into their heads to stock Otters ileagally after the original 176 Otters were placed country wide by the Otter Trust, who are to blame. And I cant see any solution to the problem, other that a natural balance being created when theres not enought food for them to maintain their numbers. Bob

I have had conversations with EA experts on this , and the studies that showed otters main food preference being eels was taken on a game river with the main prey being eels .
