Ive only caught two barbel this season on halibut pellet the rest were taken on luncheon meat. Has halibut pellet run its course?

Roy I think the pellet is still a good bait , I am still catching on them. But like all anglers I like to ring the changes, but never seem to do any good with bread, sweetcorn, its a confidence thing with me GL DR

Hi Roy
I have been doing a experiment with my baits over the last 3 seasons on my local strecth of kennet. L.Meat only had results while rolling baits never on statics S.corn has had some real plus days and negtives. however the 4 main baits i have been using are pellets paste boliles and lob worm. During the summer months i have found the pellets to work well along with most of the other baits with the exception to lob worm for som reason only the chub seam to touch them. when we get to autum and the usual first floods i then seam to be out fishing others anglers on a regular basis by using the lobworm and also occasionally slugs. I can recall about 10 sessions over last 2 years where other good exp anglers have struggled on the pellet and bolies and i am catching a dozen fish on the naturals and may i say the bites on a lob are always massive wrap rounds they take so confidently. When the colder months I have also found when we hit december the pellet does seam to out fish every other bait and the only rason i can assume is because of the amount of feed going in the river they see it as naturall bait with less danger than in the summer months mainly due to lack of anglers trying to bear the cold. Thanks for the results of your experiment Wozza, I might have to vary my baits a bit more.
In this weeks Angling Times there is an article on Temesevern baits which asks the question "are Lamprey flavour boilies the best Barbel bait ever?" An angler caught 13 Barbel up to 11-10 on them from the Royalty at Christchurch recently. Perhaps they worked well on the Royalty because of its nearness to the sea .Has anyone tried them yet? I'm thinking of placing an order. Heres the link to Themesevern here Micky |

For what its worth people are catching barbel on Lamprey sections also.
Its the next big thing they reckon... Now its been publicised in magazines it may well become the new 'halibut pellet'... Boilies out now - pellets to follow... Or so I hear... Jez |

Here's a thing.
I have been supergluing pellets recently, rather than banding them. One of the drawbacks here is that the s/g nozzle quickly becomes blocked. A handy tub of nail polish remover pads (acetone) sorts it out. |

Thanks for the tip Simon. I read recently that it is better to side band /superglue pellets
(in clear water conditions) rather than use a hair rig as the fish is less likely to see the bare hook. Worth a try in the current conditions. Micky |

I have used lamprey boilies occasionally on the Kennet since summer 07 and picked up a few barbel but think the pike started picking up the bait as I went
through a stage were the hook length would break with little resistance on the strike and on one occasion landed a small jack.

Some good feedback here especially Wozza's findings thanks for sharing the experience. I have only been fishing the Kennet for a year now and learning all the time I have only fished Wasing this season and I always fish Elips Salmon pellet on
one rod with a second (where possible) rod on a change bait usually a boilie, paste etc. etc. I nearly always catch on the pellet and in my case it has
resulted for 75% of my fish rolling meat accounting for the rest (thanks Jez).
