As some of you know KJ. now based in beautiful Cape Cod and I had 5 days fishing last week in Florida and off the Cape...
Thought I'd share the story with you of our great trip...
Saturday 24th - Jez leaves Heathrow for Boston (6 hours 45 mins) to meet KJ at the airport for our transfer to Miami, this plane was 2 hours late so my 1st portion of ribs was downed with a large Samual Admas beer (highly reccomended) then off to Miami.
Sunday 25th - Arrive Miami 1am (13 hours after leaving London) and then a pleasent 75 minute drive to the Key Largo Hilton - very nice too, up at 10am to go and meet Captain George for our 1st Tarpon trip - alas the weather was against us as we sped out into open ocean as the waves were kicking up way too big for our boat and we retreated back to dock. We drowned our sorrows, mainly in maple syrup on my mega stack of pancakes, and took an easy day.
Monday 26th - Out with Captain Danny from Papa John's marina for tarpon at 4am, we float fished crab on the surface and although Tarpon were leaping all round us we couldnt connect but did see a couple of boats landing these awsome fish. That evening we went out with top guide Captain Bruce and at last KJ hooked up a Tarpon, as Kev will tell you a tiny bite for such a beast and the fight was on, for about 30 seconds... The fish (estimated at minimum 80lb) leapt 3 times and on the 3rd jump spat the hook, we were all gutted but an amazing sight.
Tuesday 27th - Captain Bruce, knowing we wanted to catch something, took us to his secret Bull Shark Spot and within seconds I was playing the 1st of 10 sharks we got to the boat, an 'average' fish at 100lbs+... KJ was then in with the biggest of the trip at 150lbs +, heres a couple of snaps for you...
After this amazing experience we drove back to Miami to head back to Boston, after another 2 hour delay we got back to Kev's at 2am (minus KJ's bag, which did not make the trip...)
Wednesday 28th - Took a drive round with KJ, the Cape is an amazing, awe inspiring place with amazing views and scenary, just great. We went out for a 2 hour session with a mate of Kev's that evening and bumped into a few Bluefish and KJ had a nice Striped Bass of about 7lb, heres the best Blue Fish we caught...
Thursday 29th - Again we were blown off the water so did a bit of shopping, sampled the local 'full rack of ribs' several doughnuts and fealt rather unwell...
Friday 30th - My last day but Kev knew he had saved the best for last, Andrew Cummings (one of only 8 full time Shimano pros in the USA) took us out on his 27ft boat for Striped Bass. Having struggled all week Andrew assured us we'd be ok.... KJ and I had over 50 bass in the next 5 hours, well into double figures and I was lucky enough to fulfill a life's ambition to catch one off the top, jerking a popper through the surf for a decent double figure Bass, amazing stuff...
KJ had saved a real treat for me at the end of the day as I boarded the fully booked, 8 seater from his local airstrip back to Logan International Airport, the small Cessna ride at 2500 feet back over the ocean was amazing and really the only way to travel...
Then on the Virgin flight back, 1 hour late, taxied then a fuel leak started, 4 hours waiting on the plane - arrived 4 1/2 hours afeter we should have, they left my bag in Boston this time !!!
Oh well, a great trip, thanks KJ, we'll do it again next time,
Hope you found this a fun article as its another trip I've been so luck to have done,
Roll on 2 weeks Monday,
Jez
