Do you remember when Woolworths sold cheap tackle?
I think it was branded under Winfield.
Don't you think it is a kick in the teeth for the local tackle shops?

I hate Tescos with a passion. I'd rather starve than buy food from a company that's taking over the planet. So many high streets devoid of specialist
shops because of them. Thay are evil and should be eliminated. Especially hate them for continuing to support battery farmed chicken despite Hugh
River-Cottage and Jamie Oliver's progammes showing the obscene conditions the chickens are housed in.
After that rant, it's pretty obvious I won't be buying tackle there. Nope, I'm going to support my local tackle shop and Bennetts of Sheffield and E-bay and Hindons. Oh my God! What's happening? Sign of the times? Roy |

The danger of people like Tesco selling fishing tackle is with their buying power they will be able to sell tackle for a lot less than our local tackle shops.
This is a double edged sword, we will be very happy to get cheaper fishing tackle but this will leave our local tackle shops relying on selling maggots,
ragworm etc to make a living. Taking into account the cost of running a shop (rent, rates, standing charges etc) imagine the price of a pint of maggots £200
?....you wouldn't pay it would you, and they would be forced to close.
And i cannot see Tesco or any other supermarket selling maggots along side food...... regardless of where they get their chickens from. This also applies to ebay and internet shopping in general (imo) Dave |

Dave Hi mate I think Tescos will only sell starter kits for kids and newcomers. The tackle shops will be ok cannot see the local Tescos selling a rolling pin
MK 2 or a Hardy rod Best DR

The trouble beings when you start selling tackle in places like that is because these so called "new anglers" don't relies that they need a
fishing licence when they go fishing !
Also yes it's taking away trade away from our local tackle shops that need all the business they can get ! Made It Ma, Top Of The World

Hi David
I'm sure you are right, probably the same sort of stuff that Argos are already selling. But i'm sure there are plenty of ex-grocers, butchers, fishmongers etc that would feel differently as i know people who bemoan the advent of the retail giants, It all starts somewhere. I, however, am just as guilty as the next man for buying cheap tackle online and saving a few quid , and i agree that someone as large as Tesco on the side of angling is a
good thing...

When I was in the States last month I found a tackle shop in a Winn Dixie store! It had a separate entrance as well. So if Tescos did the same - which meant
your local tackle dealer just relocated, I may feel different. But there's as much chance of that happening as Tesco's themselves only having free
range chickens on their shelves.
As far as the MD supporting fishing - well he's bound to say that if his stores are just about to flog fishing gear isn't he? It's all marketing - don't get conned. Support your local tackle shop. There's only one left in Thatcham/Newbury now. Also, there are no butchers or bakers anywhere around here, thanks to the likes of Tesco.

I have looked in the "Tesco Direct" catalogue and don't see there's any threat to 'proper' tackle shops.
There are few TFG items (rods/reels) but most of the tackle is under the "Hardwear" or "2XL" labels. Certainly there is much less tackle than in the Argos catalogue. I might agree that these outlets might attract the "casual" or the "beginner" but that is no different than has been the case for years, including Woolworths/Winfield as was stated before. But I would add that these people could be deterred from 'proper' tackle shops anyway. Recently I was told of a family who'd visited a 'proper' shop, but they were very obviously deterred by the congregation of laughing and quite loud (not to mention swearing) anglers in there, and probably felt that they might be treated badly. It was only normal banter, but they felt uneasy, and they didn't bother. That's a shame, but fortunately they asked me and I helped them - but then I know little about floats and puddle fishing .............. and very little about barbel fishing too it seems
