Posts: 50 08/08/2008 19:13:15	Tags : None Hi lads - can you give me any advise on reducing hook length tangles. The set up i have been using is a running 'block end feeder' on the main line down to a swivel with a bead to protect the knot and hook length tied to a swivel. Main line is either X line or Power Pro. Hook line I have used more recently is Korda Gravel Brown sinking braid and hook lengths tend to be shortish. Fishing close in is fine but on casting 25% of the time on retrieval the hook length is tangled with the main line. This must be reducing my chances of catching, which at the moment is dismal so any help is very welcome. I appreciate other hook length lines can be used - mono - flurocarbon - coated braid ect, but wondered how you guys get round this problem. P J did demonstrate at the Avon bash, his method of tying braid and mono using the Albright knot which I find quite difficult at the moment. Many thanks Tony

Posts: 1246 08/08/2008 21:00:13 Moderator	Hiya Tony. I will sometimes use a one/ one and a half inch length of silicon tubing on the hook length. Fitted over the eye of the swivel it does deter the hook length turning back on itself. Another thing of course is to 'feather' the line before the feeder hits water, this will propel the bait forward of the feeder, hopefully. Or you can use ESP Snake skin or similar. Strip the coating off at the hook and swivel end for your knots and leave the rest coated. This makes a stiffer rig which should not double back on itself. Hope this helps,---Best wishes,---John.

Posts: 98 09/08/2008 10:33:13	Could be tangling on the retrieve? For casting I have found a small PVA bag attached to the hook slows the descent of the hooklink down and prevents tangles. Alternatively the rubber sleeves mentioned above work well.

Posts: 245 09/08/2008 16:52:48	My thoughts would be to fish a stiffer hooklink. Go for either a fluorocarbon hooklink or a coated braid. If you want it supple at the hook, simply strip back a little of the coating (around an inch or so) just above the hook eye. I'm not sure how you are attaching the feeder to the mainline (is it through the feeder style inline or just by passing the mainline through a swivel on the feeder?) as this can make a difference. If you are using the latter, try a john roberts feeder boom to help prevent tangles. Paul

Posts: 246 10/08/2008 14:50:00	Tony, You'll probably find that it's the feeder that is wrapping itself around your hooklink on casting and splashdown on the water. Have you also thought about creating a stiff link on the feeder by sliding a length of silicone tubing over the swivel etc to help stiffen the link between mainline and feeder. You may also find it helps if you tie an overhand loop of around 3 inches at the end of your braided hooklink and attach this to your mainline via a loop to loop through the swivel. The hooklink is then effectively doubled up near the feeder and thus stiffer standing it off and away from the feeder. Paul

Posts: 52 10/08/2008 15:24:34	Hi Paul Initially i have purchased some of these Korda Run Rig rubbers to fit on main line and then fit over the swivel, which as you say should help to stiffen link between mainline and feeder. I also looked at their Anti Tangle Sleeves but as you lads said a short length of silicon tubing on the hook length will do just as well. I will try these two changes out on my local club lakes next week and give them a test run. Thanks Tony

Posts: 53 14/08/2008 19:38:52	To day I visited my local club lake and tested the hook lengths which were set up with a short length of silicon tubing fitted over the swivel eye. With 15 underhand test casts using the same - hook length material - feeder - line - rod - etc, that I used on the Kennet - I did not get one tangle single tangle. I then hair rigged 2 Elips pellets and put small pellets in the feeder and had five carp to 9lb in a short session. So nice one lads thanks for you're input I believe you've solved problem. I now need to put this to the test on my next visit to the river and get my first Kennet barbel. Tony
