Theres been a lot of press about the River Wye so we thought we'd go down there and check it out for ourselves, it was fantastic but as usual with these trips the weather played its part...
Sunday 17th and Monday 18th - Jez and Dave Redfearn - River Wye...
Almost impossible conditions greated us on our arrival and its fair to say that Sunday was a wash out with only Dave scoring with a 4lb+ chub and that was it !! Amazing bit of water but 5 foot up and rising !!!
Monday saw us on a great beat of the river and we settled down to catch a few, we did the right thing, baited up and waited but 5oz was no way near holding bottom and we relied on the grippa lodging itself onto a rock to allow us to fish, we managed 4 barbel but it was hard going and we were quite pleased with that catch even though the stretch can produce 20+ fish a day in normal conditions...
As you can see from the picture it did'nt look like an August river !!
Tuesday 19th - Saturday 23rd - Jez, Danny, Andy and Simon - Warwicks Avon & River Wye...
Danny joined me on Tuesday and we had a great day, catching 11 barbel in 6 foot of extra water and we had to work real hard for the fish but everyone of them was pristine and perfect. The fights were awesome and we had a great day. The river was rising during the day and at 8 foot up we had an awesome view of a 30ft whole tree floating past.... Here are a couple of pics from the day...
Wednesday and Thursday greated us with the news that the river was now 9ft10" up (theres a level indicator phone line you can call) so we tried to repeat Tuesdays efforts but it really was a waste of time and we didnt bother. We did arrange to meet Danny's brother Andy and his mate Simon on the Warwicks Avon the next day...
Friday saw us on the Avon and we all agreed 'barbel virgin' Simon could have 1st take and the below picture tells you what went on...
11lb of pristine barbel and what a fish for your 1st one !!
Saturday and back to the Wye as the level was now only 5ft up and we did really well again with Andy, Danny and myself banking 13 fish including 9 more barbel including a double hit for Andy and me, bites within 10 seconds of each other...
All in all a fantastic trip, the weather was not kind but a great week away and highly reccomended, thanks for the company chaps, we'll do it again next year !!
