Posts: 1 16/09/2008 11:29:56	Hi Pete I've just returned to fishing after a few years and relaxing by the river is fantastic, why I gave up is something I just can't answer (too many poor matches!). For the first few hours down the river I thought I was on a load of fish, the tip was rattling and I was so sure that it would wrap round with my first Barbel for years! How wrong was I eh? It took me a while to realise it was Crayfish having a free lunch, if anyone can suggest a way of fooling them I'd be interested to hear it too 2 trips and no fish so far, whats the record for fishless sessions I feel I may surpass the record sometime soon See you on the river soon Rob

Some time back KP, (I think it was), came up with the idea of putting tinned cat meat into a stocking, tying a length of string round it and placing the smelly bag close in to the edge at the bottom of the swim. Tie the end of the string to a stick. This in theory should attract all the crayfish in your swim and keep them occupied all day. I have never tried it but it sounds good. (don't forget to take it home with you at the end of the day in a plastic bag). Paul is quite right, some swims seem to have more crayfish than others and I often get the feeling that some one was there the previous day and chucked a load of free offerings in, turning the swim into crayfish city. So less is best for freebies. One good thing about crayfish taps is when they suddenly stop and you know that Barbel have moved into the swim Best wishes,---John.

I tried several different swims, perhaps I should make some new ones I even tried a 21mm pellet and that came out like a marble. I was just wondering if non fish/meat baits was the way to go. Posts: 25 16/09/2008 19:20:08	Yep, I have been to several stretches of the Kennet, where there are either no crayfish, or very few. Others, however have loads. The tin of cat food pierced with a screwdriver and dropped in the margins is a great idea, and goes some way to stopping them. Other things I've tried: - rock hard big boilies - to harden them, place them in sugar for 24 hrs or so. - "wrap it" - almost like shrink wrap (clear) - puts a protective coating around your bait - but must be done at home - since it requires boiling water/steam - plastic baits - worth a try, and yes, when they stop WATCH OUT!! When I landed the Barbel, (11-8) all that was left of the pellets was one hardened flake where I had been over generous with the super glue.. There are ideas circulating that if you partly coat pellets with nail varnish, (allow a couple of days for the smell to go), it will make them more resistant to crayfish, ---same principal. Maybe i'm being too hasty to wind in after the taps stop! Out of interest, perhaps we can conduct a quick straw Poll on the site :- So all of you - How long do you wait before after the taps stop before you wind in. How long does your nerve hold ? and those of you who can sit it out :- How often do you wind in a bare hook rig? Cheers Jess
