Posts: 103 18/09/2008 19:48:55	Tags : None All, I have seen mentioned a few times fishing with single hook baits e.g. no loose feed at all. I'm interested to know if people are using pellet or boilie in this scenario (or other) and if they have prebaited the stretch first or are just putting the hookbait in and nothing else? Mark

I have fished this way for 2 seasons now and results are .......... well, I will continue I fish Kennet, Trent, Teme amongst others Just picking 2 sessions last season which were quite good One session, somewhere new, I had three doubles plus one an ounce short, and several other fish and I used maybe 8 pellets and 8 boilies. I glue two pellets or two boilies back to back on a hair. Another session, again somewhere new, I had two doubles and seven other fish, and I used maybe 10 pellets and 6 boilies Is it luck? that fish pick up these baits? - well, using that well known saying that goes something like "the more I practice it, the luckier I get" Ok, I've picked just two, but not to show the fish as such, it is to emphasise how little bait I get by with. No bait manufacturer will pay many bills from my purchases I'm afraid Recently however, I've decided to introduce hemp by hand to see if it affects catches, but it's early days yet. paul4

Posts: 4 18/09/2008 22:29:39	It's also worked for me many times on the river whether it's coloured or clear,summer or winter, i just think it's a bait that looks like it's just been left there for some time and the barbel feel the same and don't feel spooked by a single bait laying on the river bed. Paul Do you find a high attract style boilie better than a HNV (Food) bait when fishing boilies? I'm guessing shelf life as a bag of frozen would be useless by the time you had used half of it? Also I am feeding very little this season (although masses based on this discussion) e.g. a dozen pellets per swim maximum and its working OK. Mark

I've had them for 3 seasons now, and have enough for 3 more I guess. Ok, the sugar (I believe it is) has leaked and they've gone whitish (not mould) but they work fine. I often glug just prior to casting out, but not always - just depends on the day. I put all my theories to use on the Trent last night .................... and blanked although I did use a feeder for much of the time with a mix of smell but little feed ingredients. paul4

Have fished single hook baits and caught well and have fished with heavy feed and caught well, just depends, As far as bait is concerned if they are going mad you'll catch on almost anything, it does not matter what bait if they are up for it and on the munch, just adapt your style to conditions... Posts: 47 22/09/2008 21:23:21	Two exponents of the 'no bait' theory I know are Graham Elliot who uses a feeder but puts very little bait in with great success and Paul Slusarenko check out his pellet cage method on his website. http://www.barbel-fishing.me.uk/ I tried the GE style of fishing and increased my catches on the Kennet last season and have found it to be a good way to start you can always increase your feed if you find you need to but as they say 'you can't take it out once its in'! I have met anglers on the Kennet who declared to only fish with a single bait and claim success although I cannot verify there catches but do not think they were lying. Under normal conditions I always fish pellet to start with if I am static to see if fish are in the swim and sometimes it is a very short time (4 seconds is the fastest bite I have had). I fish boilies and paste on a 2nd rod or as a change bait if no success and I often roll meat with some success. When times get tough it is a method that can produce the late great Ivan Marks told me once if you had eaten a bag of chips and someone offered you another bag you would refuse (well most of us would) but if they offered you a single chip you would probably take it so on our pressured waters where you do not know what has been thrown in by the angler fishing your swim previously I've found its a good way to start. I've seen so many fishermen on rivers, (not just the Kennet), throw out huge amounts of feeder pellets before they even wet a line, not knowing if there are Barbel already feeding in the swim. Posts: 59 25/09/2008 16:20:08	I feel it is always worthwhile keeping your options open, i mainly use feed either through the feeder or pva but sometimes this doesnot produce a bite so i recast with a single bait and it can produce.. I would reckon if the feed not bringing them in then use a single bait just above/below the feed. doesnot matter what type of bait i use. Obviusly when rolling meat its a single bait but often can incite fish with a hand full of mini pellet to get them interested.. Wozza

Posts: 257 28/09/2008 19:46:29	For something totally different, why not try the 'shape a bait' range of baits from teme Severn. These are baits made in the form of a jelly and are flavoured in their popular flavours. You can either make the jelly into a huge flat strip and cut / dice sections of it or even use your own moulds and make bait shapes that you like the look of. The jelly breaks down slowly and thus acts as an attractor washing down the river, drawing fish up to your hookbait. It's been working well for those who've used it so far.
