I see an increasing number of posts with reference to using bait runner reels to catch barbel.
I just can't get my head round it. OK, I've bivvied up fishing for carp using bolt rigs, bait runners and bite alarms.
It's hard work sitting by your rod all night looking at your bobbins. But this method seems to be happening more and more on rivers. I was down
the Wasing a couple of weeks ago, leaving the fishery at 10:00pm. Just before I got to my car, I bumped into an angler setting up his bivvy and bedchair ....
and ......... wait for it ...... he was a good ten yards from the river! I spied his remote bite alarm receiver on the bedchair. That is so not right.
I sit by my rod (or rods if the swim's big enough) when barbel fishing. That's the way I've always done it. I can't see me using a bolt rig -
I love the excitement of the initial contact with the fish.
However……… the bait runner method seems to work for some anglers. So
if it's acceptable for carp, why not for barbel? Or is it me just being a traditionalist?
