Posts: 28 06/11/2009 20:27:27 andy o'shaugnessy	Tags : None I had a really good rummage recently, and came across lots of forgotten tackle from quite a few years back. Mostly Carp in those days where I would weekend at a lake known as Bury Barn in Bourton-on-the -water. Tackle wise, it was Jack Hilton fast taper Carp rods, glass of course, Mitchell 411 high speed fixed spool reel's, Optonic hi/lo alarms and monkey climber indicators. I had a Bedchair, a blue canvas thing with a ratchet system that folded into three, which I painted (canvas as well ) in the essential matt black paint. I slept in a Send Marketing "Brolly camp" a olive green canvas trow-over for your brolly, which was then pegged down with 8 matt black pegs! I can't remember the line I used, but it was Black I believe, The hooks were either Au-lion-dor, or Jack Hilton "low water salmon hooks" that were cut down then a blob of solder made the "eye". I think its safe to reveal my secret bait recipe, Trout pellets, Kit-e-kat, bisto gravey powder, and Equivite, a protein powder used for horse feeds. It was all mixed into a brown, soft, pliable paste that stunk like hell. Boy did it drive the carp crazy. Bearing in mind I was young, free and single, in those days, My car ( Mk2 Cortina) and carp fishing was all that mattered, such happy days!! Can anyone recall brand names, or other tales of their youth??? Any other Pioneer Tackle Tarts out there?? Might be very interesting ??? Andy If only Grayling grew to double figures..

Back in the very early '70's their seat boxes and rod holdalls were everywhere and then they seemingly vanished from the banks as other manufacturers took over. Occasionally a customer brings in an Efgeeco bait box - green box with a cream lid - and I go all nostalgic over a bloody brand of fishing tackle! Ahh memories Davis Fishing Tackle

Posts: 12 23/12/2009 19:20:38 colin gordon	Efgeeco, there's a blast from the past I've still got an old black and red seatbox made by them... Must be nearly 25 years old now. A smallish seatbox I'd still use it now and then for roving but for the ridicules fitted cushion, all of about 4" x 12". Rather like perching on a razor blade!

Posts: 159 23/12/2009 19:47:55 ian crook moderator	Being considerably younger than you guys, my first set up was a rod my dad had made in the Queens Bays Regiment from an old steel and copper tank aeriel and an Intrepid Black Prince reel with Bayer line..............Billy Makin floats and lead weights!! I carried all my gear around in my basket which I also sat on and kept my coffee hot in a flask which I had to get a refil liner for about every 2 months because I kept dropping them!! I think my Dawsons Of Bromley rod was 60's though, perhaps even the Intrepid Monarch too? I've got one of those Efgeeco small bait boxes, holds a can of Jolly Green perfectly! Posts: 90 23/12/2009 23:34:21 mark anderson	Hi men , I started carp fishing in the early 70,s . There was nothing at all really then , you had to make it . I used to get blanks and make all my rods , and as I was working as an engineer at Vauxhall motors , I had access to alot of material to make all the other bits we take for granted now!!. I ended up making titanium adjustable buzzerbars , good knows how much they were worth , and spent days making bobbins etc . This then led me to designing , and making all the stainless buzzer bars , bank sticks , needle bar systems , and PTFE adjustable bobbins to match for Leslies Of Luton . If you look at some of Rob Maylins books , the stainless systems he used at the time were all mine ( he was apprenticed with me then ) . I did this for Leslies for 2 years , BUT !!!!!!!!! if anyone says you can make a living out of it , they are telling porkies !!!!. I was fishing a lake with Martin Locke ( Solar ) , and realised that after talking to him that unless you had other lines it was a non starter . By the time we had bought all the pipe and basic matirials ( in large lengths ) , stored it , made all the components , delivered it to Leslies ( calling off batches of 40 ) we were making it for the love most months and called it a day . The needle systems were a work of art , and people loved them . I only sold the last couple least year , and seem to find bits all over the place . I have often walked around a lake and spotted something of mine . Bugger making it now , the stuffs so cheap to buy . Hatter I GOT SOUL , BUT IM NOT A SOLDIER .......

Posts: 41 24/12/2009 15:05:22 andy o'shaugnessy	Ian you cheekey bu##ger! Don't be misled by my highlighted hair!! I had a tank aerial rod, made by my grandfather, and very good it was too. I used it for anything that swam, after Reading Mr Crabtree by torchlight under the besheets!!! Plenty of good perch in those days, my reel had no roller on the bail arm, and soon was wearing a groove which ultimatly lost me a pike whilst plugging a gravel pit. Funny that, boxing day was always spent plugging for pike, a sort of family tradition. Merry Christmas everyone !!! Andy If only Grayling grew to double figures..

In one of the early pics is the stainless set up discribed above in my post . Also one of the pics is of Rob playing a fish at "the cracker factory " , this is Stanborough Lakes , somewhere we used to fish after work . I was standing with a mate who took that photo , and I wont lie , brought a lump to my throat . I wish I could turn the clocks back men , I know you should not say things like that , but its true . The late 70,s and 80,s were a hay day for me , skipping around willy nilly fishing lakes all over the place . Savay , Harefield , Pit 3 , Arlsey , all fantastic time I can tell you . The forward to Robs book made my day . As Rob once said to me " GLORY DAYS " !!!!. Hatter I GOT SOUL , BUT IM NOT A SOLDIER .......
